TIG Not MIG All Cobra Sport Exhausts feature tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding rather than metal inert gas (MIG) which is used employed by many competitors in the aftermarket performance exhaust market. Cobra Sport Exhausts are hand crafted by highly trained exhaust technicians in Sheffield, utilising superior TIG welding techniques to create a product of the highest standard. When compared with MIG, TIG welding is a technically superior, intricate and highly precise process requiring a much higher level of operator skill, co-ordination and experience. TIG welding requires the components to be spotlessly clean prepared surfaces and cut to within smaller tolerances enabling an aesthetic weld with no splatter. TIG welding produces a stronger more durable weld that is generally more malleable and less brittle due to the slower cooling rate of the metals. The TIG welding process heats the stainless steel enough to bond with minimal filler needed. This process allows total control over the weld producing a perfect bead with a flatter, intricate and visually striking finish in keeping with the hand crafted quality associated with Cobra Sport Exhausts. MIG welding is more commonly used for lengthier welds where speed is key but lacks precise control of the finish weld leading to splatter, rough edges and overspill. This resonated sports exhaust includes the centre silencer and has a subtle but sporty tone. This exhaust however, is also available as a non-resonated version (excluding centre silencer) which is a louder option. All relevant fittings and gaskets are supplied. COBRA SPORT REVIEW The Astra GTC 1.6 Turbo is one which will always be on the list of cars regularly tuned and so Cobra Sport were eager to take advantage of the full tuning potential that this car offers. From the moment the car arrived, Cobra Sport wanted to add something a little bit special, with the de-cat and sports cat options and resonated and non-resonated options, a scintillating soundtrack can be created for those seeking a more powerful sound quality. The resonated cat-back upgrade provides a softer refinement that raises the game a little, without compromising on day-to-day usability. With the many fitment options available in this model it is certainly possible to tailor the exhaust upgrade to suit your own specific requirements. The Cobra Sport resonated cat back exhaust benefits from a very useful 29% weight saving when compared with the OE cat back system weighing in at only 12.94kg. The overall exhaust sound design certainly sets the car apart from the non-tuned versions, with the Cobra Sport resonated cat back system coming in at a sportier 4 dB sound increase and the non resonated variant at 6 dB increase, when compared to the standard cat back system. The full de-cat turbo back system increased the sound level at 4,000rpm to 85db, a 10db increase over the standard exhaust system. This Astra GSI performance exhaust is made in 3/76.2mm pipework and fits from the turbo backwards (Turbo back system) these exhausts replace the front pipe, standard catalyst, centre and rear sections. This exhaust is also available as a high flow sports catalyst version, which will pass these checks. This resonated sports exhaust includes the centre silencer and has a subtle but sporty tone. This part is also available as a non-resonated version (excluding the centre silencer) which is a louder option. All relevant fittings and gaskets are supplied. How are your exhausts made? All of Cobra exhausts are made from aircraft grade 304 stainless steel and constructed using precision TIG welding with mandrel formed bends in the pipe work for a smoother gas flow. Cobra pride ourselves in producing high quality products. What sound can I expect from your exhausts? Cobra exhausts will have a more sporty tone than original equipment exhausts. This is an inevitable result of the less restrictive systems they produce. However, with careful design and production methods, Cobra aim to keep a subtle sporty tone. If you prefer a loud system, then one of our non-resonated (no centre box) exhaust systems will provide a louder exhaust note. Many of Cobra products feature a movie of the exhaust and give some idea as to the sound which you can expect. What power gains can I expect to achieve? Of course this varies from engine to engine, our systems are designed and manufactured to maximize gas flow with increased diameter pipe work, free flowing silencers and mandrel bends which provide a much less restrictive exhaust system than original equipment exhausts, resulting in a much better engine response and increased BHP. Typically you can expect to achieve around a 10% increase from the installation of a cat-back system. Some individual products also show approximate power gains. Is it legal to put a de-cat pipe on my car? You can only de-cat your car if it was registered prior to 1992, otherwise it will fail the emissions check at your MOT station. Will my car need remapping? If you are fitting a cat back system to your car, this will have no effect on the engine management operations. However, if you are replacing your original system with a de-cat, sports cat or front pipe your car may need remapping as it may cause the vehicles engine management light to activate. What is the difference between resonated and non-resonated systems? Resonators are box chambers incorporated into the exhaust system, which are used to make the exhaust quieter, by cancelling certain sound frequencies. A non-resonated exhaust system will therefore, give a louder exhaust note and a resonated exhaust system, a quieter exhaust note. Either option will still provide extra performance. What is a Slash-Cut tailpipe? Slash-cut tailpipes are finished and cut off at a 15 degree angle, and suit certain types of vehicles depending upon the shape of the bumper and overall aesthetics of the vehicle. All our exhausts come with highly polished mirror finish tailpipes and rear boxes. All other pipework and gaskets etc, will be a matt polished finish. If you do require highly polished pipework this is now available as an optional extra when purchasing via our website. How do I keep my exhaust looking like new? If you do not clean your exhaust/tailpipe, it will eventually become discoloured and be more difficult to bring back to its original finish. Regular cleaning with a non-abrasive metal polish such as Solvol Autosol® will ensure that your exhaust continues to look as new.
